  Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is a FCI designation? FLORIDA CERTIFIED INVESTIGATOR (FCI)

A. The intent of the certification program is to recognize investigators in Florida who have demonstrated high standards of professionalism, experience and ethics and who are committed to improving themselves and the private investigation industry. The Florida Association of Licensed Investigators in cooperation with the Private Investigators Association of Florida, the South Florida Investigators Association and the North West Florida Investigators Association has created the Joint Association Certification Committee, which presents the Florida Certified Investigator Program.

The Mission Statement of the Florida Certified Investigator program is to affirm the professionalism and credibility of the individual Florida Private Investigator, thus helping to protect the public. The program establishes high standards of knowledge in the practice of private investigations. The requirement of continuing education demands instruction in Professional Conduct and Ethics, Investigative Technique and Statutory Compliance. Florida Certified Investigators elevate the standards for the industry.

In seeking and maintaining the F C I designation the investigator is making a commitment to be among the best in the profession and to continue their education. F C I investigators are making a statement to the public and their clients that they are committed to maintaining high standards for themselves and the industry. F C I investigators have worked hard to achieve experience and reputations for excellence and continue with these efforts through the Continued Education Requirements of the program. The designation of F C I should be a much sought certification that the public can have faith in and the investigator can market either to client or employer.

Q. What is a CLI designation? CERTIFIED LEGAL INVESTIGATOR (CLI)

A. Legal investigators are licensed private investigators who specialize in preparing cases for trial attorneys. Their job is to gather information and evidence which advance legal theories to benefit the client's case. The legal investigator must possess knowledge of statutory and case law, local rules of court, civil procedure, forensic sciences, techniques of evidence collection, it's storage and admissibility.

Legal investigators assist attorneys by reviewing police reports and discovery materials, analyzing and photographing crime or accident scenes, interviewing parties and witnesses, obtaining signed statements, performing background investigations, preparing documentary and demonstrative evidence, recommending experts, and testifying in court. Legal investigators must exhibit the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct.

The National Association of Legal Investigators, Inc., sets national standards for legal investigators and confers the designation Certified Legal Investigator upon those who meet professional requirements, and who successfully pass stringent written and oral examinations. For this reason, the designation Certified Legal Investigator is a most honored and sought-after credential. Once conferred, Certified Legal Investigators must advance their professional careers by earning continuing educational credits, and by maintaining the high standards of the CLI program.
