The Deauville Hotel on Collins Avenue on Miami Beach was the storied setting for a group of 60+ private investigators or legal investigators from around the country this past week Feb 3-5, 2011. I use the term "legal investigator" since members primarily work for law firms doing either plaintiff civil litigation support or criminal defense investigations. This hotel has hosted some famous people from the Beatles to the Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Dean Martin - am I leaving anyone out?
We had some excellent speakers:
Spencer T. Kuvin
Civil Litigation on Behalf of Minors in Jeffrey
Michael A. Haggard
Civil Litigation in Premises Liability Cases
Repealing Statutes of Limitation in Child Sexual
Abuse Cases for Protect Our Kids First, Inc.
Dr. Stephen J. Cina
Broward County Medical Examiner
Medical Examiner’s Office in Civil & Criminal Cases
Dean A. Beers, CLI
Practical Exercise in Medicolegal Evidence
The premises liability presentation was very good & I always pick up something useful to use on future cases. By listening to expert practitioners such as Mike Haggart, who I have heard before, I have developed a check list for working premise liability cases and have learned of useful websites.
Dr. Steve Cina is a bit of a character but most Medical Examiners that I have met are. He was happy to be around us and make new friends since he is often working with people who shall we say do not express themselves. He gave a very interesting presentation. Investigators do deal with MEs and I have retained former MEs in questionable death cases before.
Michael Dolce is one lawyer that I would refer cases to simply due to his intensity of purpose and intellect. If you know of someone who is the victim of childhood sexual abuse then I would highly recommend considering him to handle the case.
Dean Beers, CLI is a fellow Certified Legal Investigator and has extensive experience working homicide investigations. He has special insight into the forensic aspect having worked as an ME investigator. Dean is a real pro and writes investigative books and lobbies for the profession out of Colorado.
We had a group of about 25-30 and had a wonderful evening at Joe's Stone Crabs on South Beach. I need a new case to cover my tab but it was well worth it. To dine with some of the finest PIs in the country is always a treat and if there were not a few war stories told, I would be lying.
If I can ever be of service providing a referral in another jurisdiction, please let me know and I am sure that I can find you a very competent investigator through the NALI network.
